The use of the internet of things to improve hotel management

The hotel operator group Total Hotel Experience managed eight resorts in Canary chose the Hotel Puerto de Mogan and apartment complex for the pilot project “Study of energy efficiency in the operation.”

As in all projects in which it participates study7, is approached from a more economic perspective of consumption. The amount of the electricity bill is not just a matter of how much is consumed, but when consumed. It is, therefore, in mathematical terms, an equation that serves a function of time € = KwH (t).

We chose the opendomo devices and Cloud platform for this first phase of the project in which we are monitoring all hotel key economic activities. This phase will last two months and will be repeated in the summer months, it must be taken into account in the Canaries the season lasts all year and consumption patterns will be different then.

We are facing an ambitious project that aims to address not only the total consumption, but we set ourselves the objective of knowing the consumption patterns of all activities. Thus costs may be allocated to each area of operation and then propose new elements and different working habits that allow economic improvements in operating results.

The Hotel has been chosen Puerto de Mogan because we believe has the ideal characteristics for the study: 56 rooms, SPA, own kitchen that serves a half-board, open to the public restaurant, heated pool and air conditioning in rooms. In addition, being a 4-star hotel has a customer profile we consider “type” for Gran Canaria.

The use of big data opens the door to a new vision on how to make projects, and so far we have been based on assumptions of consumption. With this study, we test the validity of these assumptions and expand our capacity for analysis and decision-related data.
